Care N’ Care Health Plan Provides Access to Classes, Socialization and Information Even as Social Distancing and Stay-at-Home Orders Prevail

Seniors Reminded of the Importance of Staying Healthy, Active and Connected as the Coronavirus Causes a Rethinking of What Was Once the Norm

(FORT WORTH, Texas – April 20, 2020) — Care N’ Care (HMO/PPO) Health Plan’s unique community outreach program Care N’ Community was created to encourage socialization as a way for seniors to stay young, both physically and mentally. Now, social distancing and stay-at-home orders have necessitated new thinking regarding just what “care” and “community” means as the nation grapples with the coronavirus.

“Because of the current situation, we—like others here in North Texas and around the nation—have suspended our community outreach events, seminars and classes until further notice,” says Kelli Blackwelder, community engagement manager for Care N’ Community. “But while physical contact has been put on hold, more than ever we want to make sure that seniors are taking care of themselves; and we’re providing the tools for them to do so.”

Blackwelder says that today, out of necessity, socialization means connecting by phone or computer, including chatting by FaceTime with children, grandchildren, siblings, neighbors, club members and others who are important in one’s life. “We are encouraging seniors to connect in this way. It helps keep everyone’s spirits up and reminds us that we’re not alone as we all wait for this storm to pass.”

To augment this social connection with physical activity, Care N’ Care is inviting all seniors in North Texas to visit its Facebook page at https://facebook.com/CareNCare and participate in SilverSneakers exercise classes they can take at home. From the Facebook page, seniors can also receive information on the best ways to get food, access important health information provided by the American Heart Association and others, and even find fraud alerts on those trying to take advantage of seniors during this horrific pandemic. Care N’ Care is also encouraging all seniors to visit the Care N’ Community page on its website—cnchealthplan.com—to access links to health and wellness materials, Medicare information and web-based resources for seniors.

“Most important, we are reminding seniors that during this new and immediate threat, it is particularly important that they continue to take good care of themselves by practicing healthy habits,” says Blackwelder. “That means eating right, exercising and taking medications as prescribed. It is also important to continue to focus on any chronic medical conditions to prevent them from getting worse.”

Beyond all of these resources, Care N’ Care is committed to making sure that members have access to the healthcare services they need during these uncertain times. Accordingly, there is no member copays for testing of the coronavirus; and members are fully covered for any telehealth visits they may have with their provider during this health crisis. Care N’ Care has also created a new section on its website where members can turn to as a one-stop shop for important information. And while its office is closed to visitors, in other ways it is still “business as usual”; and its team of health concierges remain available to assist members with any questions they may have.

“We’re looking forward to the day, hopefully in the not too distant future, when we can reboot our unique Care N’ Community program and again offer seniors a terrific array of activities, ranging from health talks with pharmacists and information sessions on end-of-life care planning to potlucks, birthday celebrations and much more,” says Blackwelder. “Whenever that comes, you can be sure that we’ll want to once again make new friends and share good times with people who are important in our lives. Never will there be a greater reminder of the importance of living life to its fullest.”
