Care N’ Care to Host “Don’t Be a Victim” Self-Defense Class for Seniors

(FORT WORTH, Texas – July 1, 2019) — Care N’ Care (HMO/PPO) Health Plan is offering a free self-defense class designed especially for older adults. “Don’t Be a Victim” will be held on July 10 from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Community Enrichment Center, 6250 NE Loop 820 in Fort Worth. The class—open to all seniors in the area—is part of Care N’ Care Health Plan’s “Care N’ Community” initiative, which presents a series of programs throughout the year designed to increase independence, reduce isolation and encourage healthy living for local-area seniors.

“Older adults often struggle with declining vision, hearing, balance and strength, which can lead to a feeling of vulnerability,” said Kelli Blackwelder, Care N’ Care’s community engagement manager. “Anyone can learn some basic self-defense, even those with mobility issues. In fact, simply learning how to be more aware of your surroundings is a key to physical security.”

“Don’t Be a Victim” will be taught by experts from Azle-based ProTex. This course has no use of firearms or other weapons. Seniors will learn to identify areas of vulnerability and learn strategies for crime prevention and personal safety, including home security; dealing with guests, visitors and home repairs; when getting out of the car to get gas; maintaining personal boundaries and space; safety in shared spaces such as laundry rooms or restrooms; and more.

The Care N’ Community program of Care N’ Care works hand in hand with local community partners to create an intergenerational support system that promotes well-being, empowerment and independence for safe and vibrant aging. Its programs differ from location to location depending on community needs and community partners, such as local senior centers, senior clubs, faith-based organizations and government agencies. Some programs stress physical activity, such as water aerobics or tai chi in the park; some are strictly social, such as adult coloring classes or Bingo; and some are educational, such as safety tips from local police or healthcare tips from local doctors and nurses.
