Care N’ Care Health Plan Encourages Preventive Care Year-Round and Especially During June’s Men’s Health Month

(FORT WORTH, Texas – June 10, 2019) — Men’s Health Month is celebrated every June to help raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men. As an organization dedicated to serving seniors, Care N’ Care (HMO/PPO) Health Plan is reminding men in North Texas to check the date of their last physical and if it’s been more than 12 months, to call their doctor and schedule an exam.

Routine health screenings and early detection can help prevent serious illness and are even more important as you age,” said Care N’ Care’s Chief Medical Officer David Sand, M.D. “Even if you feel fine, it’s important to have an annual checkup.”

As part of a regular physical, men over the age of 50 are routinely screened for prostate cancer. This is an important screening, as approximately one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. In fact, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer.

Regular checkups will also ensure that vaccinations are kept up to date. Vaccine recommendations are based on a variety of factors, including age, overall health and medical history. Even if you received vaccinations as a child, your immunity can fade with time. There are several vaccines recommended for adults over the age of 65, such as the flu, shingles, pneumonia, tetanus, whooping cough and diphtheria. An annual checkup is also a good time to speak with your physician about your general health and to have any questions you have answered.

In addition to doctor’s visits, men can take charge of their health by maintaining a healthy weight, which can help prevent illnesses associated with obesity, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and many forms of cancer. To keep muscles strong and flexible—and to maintain bone strength—most adults should get at least two to three hours of moderate-intensity activity each week and should include strengthening exercises at least twice a week.

“There is nothing more important than your health,” said Dr. Sand. “Men’s Health Month is a great opportunity to pause and consider whether you’re doing all you can to keep your mind and body healthy. And if you haven’t had a physical in the past year, call and schedule one today.”

Sponsored by Men’s Health Network since 1992, the month of June is dedicated to enriching men’s health and wellness through a broad spectrum of national screening and educational campaigns. Men’s Health Week is celebrated the week leading up to and including Father’s Day and serves as a time to raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men.
