Care N’ Care Health Plan Joins With Good N.E.W.S. and CHOICE Community Impact to Support Programs That Enrich the Quality of Life for Local Seniors

(FORT WORTH, Texas – Nov. 6,  2019) — Care N’ Care (HMO/PPO) Health Plan announced today that it has joined in partnership with the Good N.E.W.S. Living at Home/Block Nurse Program and CHOICE Community Impact to support a host of programs that enrich the quality of life for seniors in Azle, Springtown and surrounding areas. Combined, these programs provide essential social support services that enable seniors to stay in their homes and avoid premature entry into nursing homes.

As one of its joint projects, Care N’ Care has donated tote bags that will allow Good N.E.W.S. to deliver household supplies and food pantry items to local residents 65 years or older. Care N’ Care is also serving on the CHOICE Community Impact grant advisory committee. Through this grant from Texas Health Resources, home-delivered meals are made available free of charge to seniors 55 and over living in the 76082 ZIP code area.

As part of its role on the CHOICE advisory committee, Care N’ Care is helping to identify volunteers to participate in any number of programs that support the health and independence of local seniors. Volunteers are needed to provide social support and transportation to seniors who live alone; become group leaders for workshops that help local seniors reduce their risk of falls and manage their ongoing health conditions; or become a certified benefits counselor to help local seniors apply for public benefits such as a Medicare savings program. Volunteers also help seniors with household chores or provide needed companionship to seniors who are feeling sad or alone.

Care N’ Care is also “adopting” 30 seniors from the Good N.E.W.S. program to be part of Care N’ Care’s annual “Senior Santa Program.” Under this program, now in its third year,  Care N’ Care employees will shop for and donate a gift during the holidays to a designated senior. These gifts are added to a care package that also includes items such as juices, candies, puzzle books, toothbrushes, lip balms and snacks. Employees are also invited to sign-up to serve as one of “Santa’s elves” and help deliver the gifts on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

“Our involvement with Good N.E.W.S. and CHOICE is part of the health plan’s Care N’ Community program, which works with local community partners to create an intergenerational support system that promotes well-being, empowerment, and independence for safe and vibrant aging,” says Community Engagement Manager Kelli Blackwelder. “Our belief is that we are not meant to grow old alone and that being part of a community can greatly contribute to healthy, independent aging.”

Care N’ Community’s programs differ from location to location depending on community needs and community partners, such as local senior centers, senior clubs, faith-based organizations and government agencies. Some programs stress physical activity, such as water aerobics or tai chi in the park; some are strictly social, such as adult coloring classes or Bingo; and some are educational, such as safety tips from local police or healthcare tips from local doctors and nurses.
